Niagara River

The Niagara is not a very long river only about 36 miles long, but in shear volume it is massive, discharges 200,000+ cubic feet of water per second. The Niagara River is a north flowing river that’s divided into two sections the “Upper-Niagara” (above the falls) and the “Lower-Niagara” (below the falls). This always confuses people since the upper Niagara is south of the falls and the lower is north of the falls.

The water on the Upper Niagara flows from Lake Erie. The Upper is what I like to call our urban fishery. You have the city of Buffalo skyline in background and marinas and docks throughout the river. The fishing we primarily do on the Upper Niagara is smallmouth fishing. The Upper Niagara primarily is our warm water species fishery. Species such as small mouth bass and walleye tend to be the main targets from spring – fall.

The Lower Niagara is very different from its other half. The upper being surrounded by more man made urban scenery, beautiful in its own right. The Lower River is more natural scenery, high rock walls that Niagara Falls carved out. So in some areas of the river such as devils hole you’ll be fishing in a canyon surrounded by rapids. The scenery isn’t the only thing that’s different between the two sections of river. The fishing is also very different from the upper river. The Lower River is primarily our cold-water fishery. Species of fish that include king salmon lake trout, great lakes steelhead (migratory rainbow trout), and brown trout. The time of year that we fish Lower River is primarily fall-spring.

Lake Erie Charter Fishing Trips

Lake Erie

Lake Erie the smallest of the great lakes is still massive in terms of lakes.  The section of Lake Erie we fish is the eastern basin.  The lake feeds into the Upper Niagara River.  It maybe the smallest in size comparably to its brothers, but the walleye and small mouth bass fishing is 2nd to none. Lake Erie is a big fish factory, many small mouth bass in the 5lb class, with a realistic shot at a 7lb fish.  The time of year that we fish Lake Erie primarily Spring-Fall.

Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario is the end of the great lake chain with water coming from the Lower Niagara River.  Lake Ontario shares the same fishery as the Lower Niagara, not that we can’t get warm water species, but it’s primarily the cold water species that we target such as trout/salmon. The time we fish Lake Ontario is fall-spring.
